www.puroresupower.com/articles/ditch090804.shtmlThis is Dave Ditch's new op-ed on New Japan's month so far in September '04. Read it, and please respond with your comments/feedback in this thread. Thank you. My personal feedback is that I am a huge mark for Dave's op-ed here. A big time mark. He did such a great job and I think the links to articles outside of the op-ed that provide background information really sets everything up in terms of the storylines needed to be delivered. Zach

I must agree with Zach. You did an OUTSTANDING job putting things in perspective.

I feel bad that there hasn't really been any feedback for this, as it honestly was an extremely well-written piece. I didn't plan on adding my two cents, because puroresu isn't exactly my area of expertise anymore.
What I'm wondering is what can honestly be done to remedy these situations? I know Dave presented ideal solutions such as pushing Barnett and actually pushing Tenzan for more than three days at a time. But reality seems to say that those are events that are rather unlikely to happen. The problem with New Japan, from what I've gathered, is the same problem that's plaguing WWE. The vision of pro wrestling that is held by the man in charge is vastly different from 1. what pro wrestling actually is and 2. what the fans want their pro wrestling to be. The thing is that as long as Inoki is in charge, things are going to stay the same. While I don't know nearly as much about the business side of NJPW as Zach or anybody else, I highly doubt that there is any way Inoki can be removed or willingly remove himself from power. It sucks, because the bottom line is that we all have to more or less ride it out.
Inoki's a pretty fit guy, so unless he gets whacked by the Yakuza, I'm guessing we've got another...eh...40 years of this.

UWFi is pro wrestling as well. THAT'S WHY IT WORKED.

You call that stuff wrestling? Interesting...

No, it's not interesting. It is the truth. UWFi was almost completely worked. The results were almost always predetermined.
Also, check out NJ's attendances before the UWFi Feud, its not exactly like they were "sucking pond water" with the Tenryu feud.

Also also, Ditch's article was quite good and made for an interesting read. The historian in me particularly enjoyed the (Zach provided) referencing to news stories, as that little bit of citing helps to give perspective. I would have liked to see perhaps *some* positives in there, however. New Japan is doing some things right, just take a look at the line-up for 10/1 Korakuen.

Just because something is predetermined doesn't mean it is what most people think of when they think of wrestling though,

Just because something is predetermined doesn't mean it is what most people think of when they think of wrestling though, I'm assuming that by "most people" you mean "Coventry." And you are still wrong. UWFi = Union of Wrestling Forces International "The marquee says wrestling" - Gordon Solie -DA

I know that, I was joking with you...lol. Seriously though, UWF never did appeal to me, it's wrestling though.

I gave a good review to the execution of the G-1, but honestly, after that? I mean the 6-man main on 10/1 is interesting, and Sasaki/Fujita will be a good match, but the crap with Tenzan waiting until November and "needing" a different-style fight just kills the G-1 momentum to me. Let alone that EVERYTHING outside the core product is crap (and said outside crap is what Zach has been covering so nicely ) I'd like to note that this is the sort of article I could pretty much have written 2 years ago. It's when I start going back ten years and more, and do crazy things like star ratings, that I get into trouble.

I've always felt that there was another reason why New Japan isn't scoring, simply because it isn't taking its main branch of income (the wrestling) seriously. They put more stock in MMA-victories than they do in wrestling victories. IMHO that sends the message that wrestling is less important than MMA to their audience, pretty much killing it off.
We have to get the feeling that the real competition is in wrestling again, not in getting as many MMA fights next to your wrestling career so you can get better bookings. Tjat's why NOAH seems to be a more stable company than New Japan, they simply keep their competition in their own company, adding wrestlers from other circuits in the mix and putting out a decent wrestling product instead of MMA-wrestling mix-cards mainly drawing because of MMA-fighters on the card.
